born outside the mainstream
Macalli began with an interest in the underground music scenes of the 1970s and 80s, a time when much of the most distinctive culture was being created outside the mainstream. Small clubs, independent record stores, local bands and self-published zines became places where people could build something of their own without waiting for permission from the established industry. Music was at the center of it, but the culture went far beyond sound. Posters were handmade, album covers were experimental, clothes were worn and reworked, and personal style became another way of belonging to a scene.
What made that era interesting to us was its lack of polish. A screen-printed shirt didn't need to look perfect. A poster could be rough around the edges. A jacket could carry years of wear, patches and changes made by its owner. These details weren't flaws that needed to be corrected; they showed where something had come from and who had made it their own. In a culture built around limited resources and independent expression, imperfection became part of the aesthetic.
That idea still feels relevant today. Fashion has become increasingly easy to reproduce, and trends can move from one side of the world to the other in a matter of days. When everything starts to look familiar, individuality becomes harder to find. Macalli was created as a response to that feeling — not to reject fashion, but to approach it from a different direction.
Our designs draw from the visual language of underground music, gothic culture, horror, vintage graphics and streetwear. We are interested in things that feel worn rather than polished, strange rather than predictable, and personal rather than universally appealing. A graphic, a texture or a silhouette doesn't have to follow what is currently popular to have value. Sometimes its character comes precisely from the fact that it doesn't.
For us, clothing is not about creating a uniform for a particular type of person. It's about giving people something they can interpret and make their own. The same piece can mean something completely different depending on who wears it, how it is styled and what they bring to it. That's why we leave room for contrast, imperfection and a little bit of darkness in what we create.
Macalli is built around that spirit — the freedom to look beyond the obvious, to find beauty in things that are often overlooked, and to wear something because it feels right rather than because everyone else is wearing it.
For the ones who don't fit in. For the ones with their own attitude. For the ones who can still find beauty in the dark.
